Portage is the largest city we serve outside Battle Creek and the furthest west, sitting immediately south of Kalamazoo. It covers around thirty-five square miles and is genuinely suburban in character, with wide arterial roads, deep subdivisions, big employers including Stryker and Pfizer, and a chain of lakes running through the middle of it. Austin Lake, Long Lake and West Lake all sit inside the city limits. Access is generally excellent compared with the older places we work, but the distance from Battle Creek means we plan Portage jobs rather than dropping in, and we prefer to book delivery and collection together.

The housing is dominated by post-war and later subdivisions, ranches, split-levels and colonials on quarter-acre and larger lots with proper two-car driveways. That makes container placement straightforward most of the time. The exceptions are the lake neighbourhoods around Austin, Long and West Lake, where older cottage lots have narrow shared drives and low tree cover, and the newer subdivisions where homeowners associations have their own rules about how long a container can sit out front. Work here runs to kitchen and bathroom remodels, basement finishing, roof tear-offs, deck replacement, garage clear-outs and full estate clearances. Remodel debris is bulky but not always heavy, so a 20 yard box is often right. Ask your association before you book if you are in a covenanted subdivision.
The Westnedge and Portage Road commercial corridors bring a steady stream of retail and office fit-out work, and those jobs usually hinge on timing and car park access rather than size. Apartment and condominium turnovers are common too, particularly in the older complexes. On the residential side, above-ground pool removals, shed and fence replacement and landscaping clearances make up a lot of the summer work. Storm damage is a real part of the calendar here, since the city has taken severe wind events in recent years, and that brings fencing, roofing and heavy brush all at once. Those loads are bulky rather than dense, so we send a larger container and fewer of them.

West on I-94 about twenty-five miles to exit 76 at Westnedge Avenue or exit 78 at Portage Road, roughly thirty minutes. Main routes in: I-94 exit 76 at Westnedge Avenue, I-94 exit 78 at Portage Road, US-131.

Yes, we just schedule it properly. Give us a day or two of notice, agree a delivery window, and book the collection at the same time. What we avoid is short-notice single trips out and back. If you expect to need a swap mid-project, tell us at the outset and we will build it into the plan rather than fitting it in at the last minute.
It can matter more than any city rule. Plenty of Portage subdivisions restrict how long a container may sit in a driveway or whether it can be visible from the street at all. Check your covenants and get written approval before you book, because we cannot resolve an association dispute for you. Once you know the limits, we will work to them.
Yes. We put boards under the container rails as standard, which spreads the weight across a wider area and keeps the steel off your surface. Newer asphalt in hot weather is the one to watch, since it softens and can mark. If your drive is recently sealed or laid, tell us and we will discuss whether a street or verge placement is safer.
For a full basement fit-out, a 20 yard box usually works well. Framing offcuts, drywall scrap, packaging, old carpet and demolition material are bulky rather than dense, so you want volume. If you are also taking out an old concrete floor or block wall, keep that in a separate load, because heavy clean material is handled differently and mixing it will cause problems.
