Learn moreAthens, Michigan · Calhoun County
Athens is a small village in southern Calhoun County, set on Nottawa Creek with M-66 running through the middle of it as Capital Avenue. It is farm country, and the village itself is only about a square mile, a short run of commercial buildings and a few dozen residential streets surrounded by fields. The drive down from Battle Creek is easy, one highway the whole way, so despite the distance we treat Athens as routine rather than remote. Most of what we do here is split between village houses on modest lots and farm properties on the surrounding section roads.

Village housing is mainly older frame homes, one and one-and-a-half storeys, with detached garages, gravel or narrow concrete drives and reasonable room to work. Access in the village is genuinely easy compared with the older Battle Creek neighbourhoods, because the streets are wide and parking is not a problem. Outside the village you are on county gravel roads and long farm drives, and that is where the care goes: culverts, soft shoulders and spring thaw all matter for a loaded truck. The work is a mix of household and estate clean-outs, roof tear-offs, garage and shed demolition, and agricultural outbuilding clearance. Because we are coming a fair way, we would rather put a slightly bigger box on site than make an extra trip, so we ask a lot of questions about what is going in before we load the truck.
A good share of Athens work is agricultural in character even when the address is a house, because so many properties came with a barn, a shed row and forty years of stored equipment. Machinery shed clearances, hedgerow and fence line clearing, and pulling out old grain handling gear all come up regularly. The short commercial block on Capital Avenue produces the occasional storefront refit. Mobile home strip-outs and removals are more common here than in town, and those need care over what actually goes in the container. Summer storms bring windfall across the surrounding sections. Because we cover distance on every trip, we would rather bring the bigger box and have room spare than come back.

Straight south from Battle Creek on M-66, which runs down Capital Avenue and past Graham Lake, about sixteen miles and twenty-five minutes. Main routes in: M-66 (Capital Avenue), 6 Mile Road, M-60 by way of Union City.

We service Athens properly. It is a straight twenty-five minute run down M-66 from our yard, no awkward turns, so it is one of the easier outlying areas for us. We will normally ask you to be a bit flexible on the delivery window so we can fit it into a southbound run, but the service is the same as anywhere in the county.
Yes, as long as the gravel is compacted and reasonably level. Loose or freshly laid gravel and soft spring ground are the problems, because a loaded container settles and the truck can lose traction pulling it back on. If we are worried we will place near the road end on firmer ground instead. Level matters too, since the door will not swing right on a slope.
No tyres, no liquid paint, no fuel, oil, solvents or farm chemicals, no batteries, no appliances containing refrigerant, no propane tanks and no asbestos material. Old fertiliser and pesticide containers from a farm shed also stay out. If you are unsure about something, ask before you load it, because a contaminated box costs you more than setting the item aside would have.
For a container on your own property, generally no. If it has to sit in a village street or a county road right-of-way, confirm with the Village of Athens or Athens Township, depending which one you are in. The rules are set locally and they are not the same everywhere in Calhoun County, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.
